Unless you have been living under a tech bubble for the past 24 hours, I’m certain you have heard these two words in the very same sentence at least more than once – “Google” and “Alphabet.”
In a move that shook the tech world, Google announced Monday that it will undergo a company wide restructuring so that it (Google) becomes a subsidiary of a new parent company to be called Alaphabet, Inc (http://abc.xyz).
The shift will put Co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin at the helm of Alaphabet, while Sundar Pichai will become CEO of the subsidiary Google.
Page explained the name Alphabet was “inspired by the collection of letters that represent language, one of humanity’s most important innovations” and refers to “alpha bet” (alpha is an investment term that means returns above benchmark).
Ok .. that is all well and good. Another big conglomerate is changing things up. So how does it affect us?
If you own Google Stocks – The Google ticker symbol will most likely change. But for now the GOOG and GOOGL are staying put.
Do we still call them Google or Alphabet? – In my world of communication a nagging issue would be how refer to Google and/or Alphabet in say an article or social media post. Which will it be?
Other than that, who knows what changes are in store for us. Google’s move however, is meant to give new life to its many existing entities. Let’s hope that the restructuring leads way for us entrepreneurs to grow as well.
